In a survey conducted by Sport and Recreation New Zealand, Netball had the highest level of participation of any organised sport among girls aged 5-17 (18%) and adult women (10%) from 1997-2001. This was just after Temepara George debuted at International netball, which is an indication of he influence she had on Maori participants Netball wasn't ranked among the top15 sports for men in any age group, although there are male and mixed teams in New Zealand. After touch Rugby (25%), netball was the second highest rated sport (20%) among Maori respondents. In comparison, netball was ranked eighth among European New Zealanders and just tenth for other ethnic groups.
