Any age pretty much, a splitter is just a bit slower version of a fastball that dives a lot. All you have to do is place your middle and pointer fingers on the outside of the two seems, so your fingers are parallel to the seems. This grip is uncomfortable at first so it will take time to get used to it. Now all you have to do is throw it like a fastball but then at the end of your delivery, whip your arm strait down, image like you're scraping a chalkboard. It will take a lot of practice to be able to control this pitch because of the unusual finger placement and even more practice to be able to get it to break and how you want it to. But the splitter can be a very effective ground ball and strikeout pitch that is not as hard on your arm as a true breaking ball.
