Why does some wear one pant leg rolled up and the other one down?

According to some web searching i have done. One pant leg up and the other down is meant to be a gang membership sign. Some gangs favour the left and others the right. Some kids have seen this in rap video clips and have copied it. Personally, i think it looks silly. I wonder what would happen if a real gang member confronted one of these kids?
Having one pant leg rolled up is often some one trying to avoid getting their pants caught in their bike chain. If this is the case it will be the right leg that is rolled up.
