I would like to think that the original 'clown' was the white face whereas the knock-a-bout
stooge or slapstick maker would be the 'auguste' but these are old terms. I like to think that circus has the two kinds of 'clown' but others will now argue many more!
The clown or slapstick fall-a-bout guy must work exceptionally hard - be a good acrobat and all-round circus artiste. Let us appreciate the good one more.
I might add that, although I do like tradition in circus, we must allow progress in comedy provided it stay within bounds of public perception or expectation.
