While he may be of mixed heritage he identifies as a black man just like many others of similar hue as he. Colin Powell, Adam Clayton Powell, Johnny Mathis, and Harry Belfonte are black men of lighter complexions. Just as Chinese can pick out other Chinese, most black people no matter how young would easily pick Jarreau out of a crowd as similar to them. He's been involved in many black celebrations where his singing comes in handy.
