The president has seven key roles that they must fill, an eighth role comes with the job however and is commonly overlooked:
Chief of State - The chief public representative who in the US is also the ceremonial head of the government. The symbol of all the people of the nation.
Chief Executive - Invested with executive power by and through the constitution. Often described as "the most powerful office in the world."
Chief Administrator - The President is responsible for all federal departments, including cabinet departments, such as the State Department, and independent agencies, such as NASA.
Chief Diplomat - Main architect of American foreign policy and the nations chief spokemans to the rest of the world.
Commander in Chief - Gives the president direct and immediate control of the nations entire military aresenal as well as every man or woman in uniform (in the military).
Chief Legislator - Main architect of public policy, the president sets the overall shape of the congressional agenda.

Chief of Party - The acknowledged leader of the political party that controls the executive branch.

Chief Citizen - The President is expected to be "the representative of all the people." The President is expected to work for and represent the public interest against the many private interests.
