Thousands. I work at an animal shelter myself, and in just one year we had just under 1,500 animals adopted from one local shelter. This number includes all kinds of animals from all kinds of backgrounds.

One can only assume an animal has been abused by the physical conditions and reactions of the animal unless there was proof.

There are many types of abuse as well. A lot of people think that physically hurting an animal with force is the only type of abuse, but neglect is also a form of abuse as well in which case that is the majority of animals that end up in a shelter. Very few animals come into shelters from loving homes. People stretch the truth to their reasoning for animal surrender so you'll never know the real story or background of an animal unless there is proof.

In the United States, approximately 1 million cases of animal abuse are reported each year. Keep in mind that this number represents only reported cases, and many instances of animal abuse may go unreported.

First of all, the word "there" is the incorrect choice for this context of inquiry. The correct spelling to have been used is: "their". (However, there was not an option shown to post an alternate wording for this question.)

There is no way of knowing the true answer to this question, as not all cases of abuse are reported. However, after referring to the statistics, below, of the cases that have gone on record, sharing the knowledge and becoming involved are the only ways one can make change possible.

If you see someone abusing an animal, stop them. Be sure of your facts, and report it, as well.

"If we see cruelty or wrongdoing that we have the power to stop, and do nothing, we make ourselves sharers in the guilt." ~ (Anna Sewell, "Black Beauty") ~

Animal Abuse - Statistics & Studies:

Studies have shown that abusers range in age from 9 to 83. 27% are under 18 with 56% being under 30. 97% of abusers are male and have a history of having been abused themselves.

75% of prison inmates have early criminal records of animal abuse and a 1983 study showed that 88% of child abuse cases in NJ had at least one family member who physically abused animals.

Reported in 1997 that 153 violent animal abusers whose behavior was tracked for ten years, 70% committed other crimes and 38% committed violent crimes. Only 15% of animal abuse cases were heard in court and only 8% received jail time.

Of 101 victims of domestic violence, 73 reported their abuser threatened to or harmed their pets.

A member of the FBI's behavioral science unit asked 36 incarcerated multiple murderers about their involvement with animal abuse and one third said they killed and tortured animals when they were children and half said they did it when they were teens.

There is a direct correlation between animal and child abuse. Facts prove that in 88% of families where animals are abused, children were also abused, and there is a strong connection to elder abuse as well.

Abusive men frequently demonstrate to victims of their abuse by physically perpetrating abusive acts on animals in the presence of their victims in order to manipulate them as a threat of bodily harm to the victim. ****

Abuse can take many forms such as letting animals run free unconstrained or unsupervised in the community, not giving adequate attention, or shelter, lack of vet care, malnutrition, or permitting an animal to suffer from parasites or disease. Not providing water or shade and exploiting or utilizing them for fighting and abandonment are unacceptable.

Collectors or hoarders are many times examples of these cases. Frequently these individuals are mentally or emotionally ill and are unaware they are causing animals harm or to suffer. They have a an obsessive need to help when in actuality they are creating inhumane conditions.
