NOTE : The term "Goth" as a style or lifestyle is a separate related question.

The adjective "gothic" primarily refers to medieval forms of architecture (also known as "Pointed") found in, but not exclusive to, northern Europe -- from the name Goths applied to the Germanic or Teutonic tribes who inhabited the region.

Gothic can apply to styles of art or literature that embody the dark, desolate, or mysterious themes associated with the European medieval period.

It also applies to specific sans serif typefaces.

How did gothicism influence the writing of Wuthering Heights?

Gothicism influenced the writing of Wuthering Heights through its use of dark and supernatural elements, intense emotions, and mysterious atmospheres. These elements are evident in the gothic setting of the isolated moors, the haunting presence of ghosts, and the tumultuous relationships between the characters. Emily Brontë's novel embodies the gothic genre by exploring themes of passion, revenge, and the supernatural, creating a haunting and atmospheric tale.

What is the difference between Gothic and medieval?

Gothic is about the actual historical style of gothicism. For example, historical gothic clothing or items, like lace, candles, roses, crucifixes, etc. Gothic Lolita is a good example of gothic. Goth is more of the modern style of goth, however, it is not true gothicism, as many "goths" have not entered the same mindstate as "gothics." Most "goths" will wear all black and fingerless gloves, for example. Goth is much more like emo, in a way.

A group of writers that bridged the gap between the romantic literature and the realism period of literature?

I recently took a college course titled "The Novel from 1700 to 1900" and for our final paper we were to show how Gothicism was used as a vehicle to move from Romanticism to Modernism. While Modernism is not the same as Realism, they do share many common qualities. The first three books of the course leading from Romanticism to Gothicism were Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and Hard Times by Charles Dickens. The novels that started the height of Gothicism and gradually led to Modernism were The Monk by Matthew Lewis, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and finally The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. While all of the novels mentioned arguably have some elements of Romanticism, Gothicism, and Modernism, upon reading them you can see how they style of each book shows a gradual movement from Romanticism to Modernism. Hope this helps! (I answered the question before I became a member:))THIS IS AN XTRMLY GAY ANSWER

How are the women characters depicted in the story The Bloody Chamber?

Carter's representation of female characters in The Bloody Chamber depicts an array of qualities that sometimes reflect conventions presupposed by the traditional Gothic genre, and sometimes defy such archetypes.Within the story The Bloody Chamber itself, Carter opens the narrative with an explicitly sexual register, "the train's great pistons ceaselessly thrusting'' which establishes the linguistic style of a piece of erotic literature being mocked (bearing in mind that Carter is writing as a feminist). The young girl begins on a journey of sexual awakening, anticipating the fulfilment of her desires by the Marquis, whose instant sense of subsistent darkness makes the reader recognise the Gothic genre.Carter uses the narrator's apparent vulnerability to evoke a sense of fear within the reader, contributing to the effect of which through the use of an isolated setting which represents a significant distancing from humanity that creates a heightened sense of entrapment. The vulnerability of the female protagonist is closely linked with her perceivable naivety, seen in the somewhat proud assertion, "the richest man in France", which, although initially admirable and detrimental to the young girl's agreed marriage, ironically serves as a factor to create more danger; richness is associated with being above the law in Carter's stories so therefore creates a perfect platform for the extroverted Gothic elements to be realistically conveyed.Following the disturbing brutality of the girl's loss of virginity, her descript of "infinitely dishevelled" encapsulates the horrowing sense of an unretainable purity being lost. Such a depiction, structurally speaking, arrives at a relevant placing as it precedes her ultimate sin in disobeying the Marquis. Within this particular quotation, however, it is apparent that the evocative imagery Carter creates enforces a sense of melancholy; the young girl believes herself to have lost all innocence so therefore seems to complement her following betrayal. This could be contrasted, however, by highlighting the way in which she recounts "a certain queasy craving", alluding to the point that her sexual dimension still ironically remains even after the loss of her virginity that, for many readers, would resemble more of a rape act. This is paralleled with many of the other stories in Carter's The Bloody Chamber, such as within The Company of Wolves, wherein the young girl has a sexual encounter with the abhuman man who murders her grandmother, "she went directly to the man with red eyes in whose unkept mane the lice moved". Whilst on one level we can appreciate the grotesque image that this quote creates that again furthers the use of Gothicism, one feels inclined to argue that, in both cases, this is reflective of the emerging paradox inherent within the Gothic male protagonist. Revulsion and attraction are intertwined, and so consequently a rather more shocking sexual account that epitomises sensual descript is presented. An interesting distinction Carter makes with regard to females in her narratives is between those of children and women. One could argue that whilst children in the stories lack control and remain within the passivity of traditional Gothic females, conversely it is the women who are able to powerfully control their own destiny and escape from the seemingly impossible powers of the male pursuer. To illustrate and exemplify this point, firstly we can consider The Snow Child where the young girl is destroyed because of the oppression from the jealous Countess. Though there is a lack of clarity whether the child is simply am illusory 'object of his [the Count's] desire' or a real being we can nonetheless notice the degradation and sexual objectification that she is subject to which peaks when the Count "thrusted his virile member" into the dead girl. Similarly, in The Bloody Chamberthe young girl is unable to execute her own escape. In fact, she seems to resign herself to her imminent death by bathing in accord with the sacrificial ritual. Oppositely, then, it is less naive and less innocent females that are able to successfully escape their tormentors. This can be seen within the Erl King, where the girl murders the Erl before he can entrap her in a cage. Perhaps, then, Carter is making a powerful yet controversial statement about the need for a degree of cunning and corruption in order to remain a self- determining individual.Ultimately, many would regard the way in which Carter makes the young girl's mother the heroine of the story the most significant reinterpretation of Gothic women. The maternal telepathy attributed to such a feat is reflective of the apparent conquering strength of love, which possesses the only power to overcome inherent evil found in Gothic protagonists.
