The Genesis Flood, or Noah's Flood is a matter of faith for all Jews, Christians and Muslims. Because there is no scientific evidence for the Flood and many good reasons not to believe Noah's Flood to have been universal, believers must rely on the Bible to find some reasons to believe that the whole earth was covered.

  1. God wanted to destroy all of humanity. Since humans existed in all parts of the world, the Flood had to cover the entire world.
  2. In Genesis 6:13, God said he would destroy all flesh with the earth.
  3. Noah had to take every type of animal onto the Ark. This would not have been necessary if the animals could have survived outside the Near East.
  4. The Ark came to rest on top of Mount Ararat, around five kilometres above sea level. Had the Flood not been universal, the waters would simply have flowed out to sea, and the mountains would never have been under water. So, the entire world, both land and seas must have been under several kilometres of water, assuming this is geologically possible.
  5. Genesis 7:19 actually says that the earth and all the high hills that were under all heaven were coverd.
  6. Verses 7:21-22 say that all other life was destroyed.

List seven biblically based reasons for believing the flood was universal?

The description in Genesis 7:19-20 mentions that the waters covered all the high mountains under the entire heavens. The purpose of the flood was to destroy all living creatures on earth, indicating a universal scope. The covenant God establishes with Noah after the flood includes all living creatures and the earth (Genesis 9:9-10). The flood was sent to cleanse the earth of sin and corruption, necessitating a universal impact. Jesus in the New Testament refers to the flood as a historical event that affected all living beings (Matthew 24:37-39). The flood narrative emphasizes how all flesh that had the breath of life in its nostrils perished (Genesis 7:21-22). The global nature of the flood is supported by archaeological evidence of flood stories in various ancient cultures worldwide.
