I cannot answer it with certainty, but he seemed to have leanings that suggested he might have been. I can't remember the exact quote but he said that he hated doing movies that pissed on the world......and one of the very last movies he did with former co-star Rhonda Fleming who WAS a committed Christian had a powerful message about an unmovable faith in God. Called Waiting For The Wind Robert Mitchum's lead role in the movie suggested he had a personal relationship with God. Now some questions come to mind. He would have got payed very little for this movie, so what would have been his motive for accepting this role? As his health was failing him at this late stage in his acting career maybe he knew he didn't have long to live so was this his swansong.....his personal convictions were now coming out. Rhonda Fleming was one of his first movie co-stars and had not done anymore movies with her right up until Waiting For The Wind. Robert Mitchum's personal life to me always suggested he was fighting something. He was known by family and close friends and co-stars alike as a real gentleman. Only those that were close to him ever saw the true Robert Mitchum.......a great family man and having never been divorced from his wife Dorothy of 50 years right up to his death stood out like a beacon in the acting fraternity. I really deep down think that Bob knew God.

yes he was close friends with Jane Russell a devoted born again Christian,

on his deathbed he asked if she would come talk to him, and she did, I believe about God.
