Dr. Pausch preferred not to directly address the question of religion in any of his published interviews. He did infer in various ways that he was indeed religious including a reference to Moses in his taped "Last Lecture" and by thanking "our church" on his website blog just prior to the move his family made to be closer to Mrs. Pausch's family. Furthering that inference Jeffery Zaslow, the Wall Street Journal writer who cowrote his book, gave a hint in one published article: "Early on, he had vowed to do the logistical things necessary to ease his family's path into a life without him. His minister helped him think beyond estate planning and funeral arrangements. "You have life insurance, right?" the minister asked. "Yes, it's all in place," Randy told him. "Well, you also need emotional insurance," the minister explained. The premiums for that insurance would be paid for with Randy's time, not his money. The minister suggested that Randy spend hours making videotapes of himself with the kids."
If randy was a believer, he would not have left his final speech and blog entries totally detached from religious pronouncements. How is it possible for a man even with slightest faith to be so inert in faith related rituals at the final stage of life? Remember, He was supposed to be preparing for an eternal stay in the 'other world', yet he offered nothing in return even when dying by inches! He joked about 'deathbed conversion' in his final specch and said that only 9% American will support him in that( The percentage of atheists in US?).
Of course, he wanted to avoid the stigma of being called an atheist in a religiously fanatic nation which discrimates against atheists. Randy faced death as an outright materialist. He never ever uttered a single word to confirm that he was a christ-follower. His father might have been a christian, Randy himself might have remained a passive believer throughout his life. But it is cystal clear that he died either as a valiant sceptic or a happy atheist.
