As a person that suffers from a Personality Disorder I have displayed para-suicidal behaviours fairly frequently. The answer to this question is not easy. Dependant upon the state of mind that is causing the suicidal tendency it can range from reaching out desperately to withdrawing completely. I do not believe there is any singular behaviour that can alert people to a possibly suicidal person. However, there may be certain signs that can point to it. For these behaviours, it would be better to refer to the various mental conditions that precipitate suicidal thoughts.
This may sound very ambiguous, however, we are very unpredictable creatures and our states of mind are even more so.
I hope this goes some way to explaining the mind of a suicidal person... I personally have both withdrawn before attempting suicide and also behaved in a way that draws attention to my pain.
Sadly, if someone really wants to commit suicide, they will eventually succeed.
Having said that, if signs ARE recognised, and there is early intervention, a person may choose to rethink their decision if they are offered options that they had not, or were not able to, recognise previously.
Some primary behavior patterns prior to suicide may include increased withdrawal from social activities, giving away possessions, talking about feeling hopeless or trapped, increased substance abuse, sudden calmness after a period of depression, and expressing thoughts of worthlessness or self-hatred. It's important to take any signs of suicidal behavior seriously and seek help immediately.
A primary reinforcer is a stimulus that is inherently rewarding to an organism without the need for prior learning or conditioning, such as food, water, or sex. These reinforcers satisfy basic biological needs and are often effective in shaping behavior.
Nest building in birds is an example of a fixed pattern behavior. Birds follow a specific sequence of actions to construct their nests without the need for prior experience or learning. This behavior is genetically hardwired and occurs in a ritualized manner.
An instinctive behavior is a natural, innate response to a specific stimulus or situation that does not require prior learning or experience. These behaviors are often genetically programmed and are crucial for an animal's survival. Examples include birds building nests, babies crying for food, and spiders spinning webs.
A common example of a fixed action pattern behavior is a bird building a nest. Birds exhibit a strong instinct to build nests using specific materials and techniques, often without prior experience. This behavior is triggered by external stimuli such as the arrival of spring or the sight of a suitable nesting site.
Yes, geese migrating south for the winter is an example of innate behavior. It is an instinctual response that does not require prior learning and is genetically programmed in geese to ensure their survival and well-being during the colder months.
Antecedent relates to a past or prior experience. Cognitive- behavior therapy helps patients uncover past experiences whether traumatic or pleasant to explain current behavior patterns.

Suicide is not against the law in the UK. It was until the 1961 Suicide Act which legalised it and introduced laws which dealt with assistance of suicide. Prior to 1961 suicide was illegal in the UK and was punishable by prison and fines (but not death!)
Prior to 1893, suicide was prohibited in Canada, under common law. In 1893 Canada introduced its first Criminal Code, and made attempting suicide a crime. In 1972, attempted suicide was removed from the Criminal Code.

Not if they've already served punishment for the behavior.
prior to the great depression, suicide in the US was 14 per 100,000 and rose to the highest at 17 per 100,000 in 1932, shortly before FDR was elected.

It is not illegal in the UK to know that someone has expressed a wish to commit suicide. It is however illegal to assist someone to kill themselves. The UK Suicide Act of 1961 states "A person who aids, abets, counsels or procures the suicide of another, or attempt by another to commit suicide shall be liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years."
