The legendary ballerina Marie Carmago did a lot to change the fashion of ballet so as to evolve it. She shortened the ballet skirt to allow more leg and foot movement, put on the now currently fashionable ballet tights--even cut the heels off her shoes so she could have more respectable footwork.

The gliding joint in the foot allows for side-to-side and back-and-forth movement, helping to improve balance and flexibility. It also enables the foot to absorb shock and adapt to uneven surfaces during walking or running.
Plantar flexion is the movement of pointing the foot downward, like when you stand on your tiptoes. Dorsiflexion is the movement of pulling the foot upward, like when you flex your ankle to lift your toes towards your shin. These movements are important for walking, running, and maintaining balance.

Imagine standing up then raising yourself onto tip-toes and flexing the foot as far as it will go to stand as tall as you can. In this position your foot is plantarflexed. This is the opposite of dorsiflexion where the foot is pulled 'upwards'.
