10 years after the fire (in the end of Phantom of the Opera), Christine goes to New York to sing for the phantom. Meg is hurt by the betrayal that she feels for phantom. Intending to shoot herself, shoots Christine instead.
This is in Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Love Never Dies". It is amazing, I recommend listening to the soundtrack or purchasing the DVD. It will be available May 29th.
It never states in any version of Phantom of the Opera that I've seen/read how or WHEN she dies. Assuming you were asking about the 2004 version of Phantom of the Opera, Christine most likely died of old age.
In the sequel, Love Never Dies, her (former) best friend, Meg Giry, accidently shoots her in some mad rampage as she dies in Phantom's arms in Coney Island and then the son of Christine and Raoul, who now doesn't love Christine and is an alcoholic who gambled his fortune away, Gustave, finds out Phantom is really his father.
I know it sounds ridiculous, but that wasn't made up, that's actually the ending of the sequel, Love Never Dies.
Love Never Dies is not based on the original novel's story-line, because in the end of the book Raoul, Christine, and Mama Valerius disappear out of Paris. Love Never Dies is a real musical, but it is not correctly a sequel. We dont know how Christine Daae died.
Christine does not die in Phantom of the Opera. She dies in the London Stage Play Love Never Dies.
In the Andrew Lloyd Webber's movie Phantom of the Opera, it implies Old Age, since Raoul is over 70 placing the monkey music box on her grave and he discovers the Phantom had ready been there at her grave-site, he leaves his rose behind. Though in love never dies she dies at the young age of 26.
She is shot by Meg Giry- it has been built up from the start of the show Meg is shown to be jealous of Christine's success and fame especially as she's trying to establish herself in Phantasma and get into "Mr Y"'s favour. So when Christine shows up in New York slowly Meg's jealousy and insecurity slowly builds to the climax where she kidnaps Gustave, Christine's son and through the confusion and chaos she accidentally shoots Christine.
Christine did die only in the London stage play Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies.
Meg accidentally shoots Christine. Christine reveals to Gustave that the Phantom is his real father and an upset Gustave runs off. She tells the Phantom that her love for him will never die. They have one final kiss and she dies in his arms. Gustave goes and joins the Phantom. Gustave takes the Phantom's mask off but does not react as he did before. Gustave and the Phantom look at each other as the curtain falls.
In the movie, London, Broadway stage Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera, Christine leaves with Raoul, leaving the Phantom alone as he mashes the mirrors of her rejection of him.
Other Phantom of the Opera movies, Christine does not die, but the Phantom does with a broken heart.
