Jazz dancing is a genre of performed/theatrical dance that by definition is popular social dancing adapted for the stage. It was named jazz dancing due to the fact that Jazz Music was the popular music of the age (1920s). It would now officially incorporate any dance that started as a social dance/party dance that has made it to performing status. Disco, hip hop, 50s, go-go, swing, etc
The dance started when Christopher Bruce had to give up his dancing career. It's first performance was in the year 1987.

Musical theatre is more of a Broadway style of dancing. There aren't many differences between jazz and musical theatre. Probably the difference is that musical theatre is more like acting opposed to jazz dance where there is more dance technique. I personally LOVE jazz and have taken it since I was five and now I am going to be sixteen. Jazz is such a fun style of dance where you can express your style rather than act like someone else in musical theatre. Either way, keep dancing!

Jazz is a 20th century musical form, which grew out of ragtime and dixieland and developed about the same time as blues. The word "jazz" was first applied to music in Chicago in 1915, although examples of the style of music can be found as early as 1905.
