The Fiddler was the non-speaking ( title) character who was portrayed by real life violin maestro Isaac Stern. this is a popular trick question. the Lead character was of course played by Zero Mostel, but the TITLE character was played- literally on all four strings, by Isaac Stern. as far as is known his only movie role. the survival of Jewish culture in a hostile environment was suggestive by the notion of the (Fiddler on the Roof).
