Shakespeare was affected by the Latin authors he was obliged to read at school: Ovid, Plutarch and the like, and he refers to stories from these books frequently. He was also familiar with contemporary Italian fiction. He mined Holinshead's Chronicles (a history book) for the stories based on British history. He was aware of what was going on in the theatre community of which he was a part, so he knew what other playwrights were doing, and he was demonstrably affected by theatrical trends. Did any of this make him a good author? No, not really. His abilities with words, his comprehension of human nature and problems, his ability to tell a story dramatically were what made him great, and he did not get them from any other author.
