Richard Wagner referred to his conception of Opera as "Gesamtkunstwerk", or "total work of art". This idea is the synthesis of visual, musical, dramatic, and poetic art forms.
This is best shown in his Der Ring des Nibelungen or The Ring of the Nibelung which consists of 4 operas. Das Rheingold - The Rhinegold, Die Walküre - The Valkyrie, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung - Twilight of the Gods.
He took nearly 26 years writing the text and composing the music for this nearly 16 hours of musical drama. He made extensive use of 'Leitmotif' for virtually every character.
