This is an extremely important question. The correct answer is a person known to be as great a singer as CARUSO, and to have had more influence on our culture and singing styles than any man in history. He was the most versatile, capable, and possibly the greatest singer of all time. People have called him John Charles Thomas. That is a pseudonym, for which absolute proof is now available. THIS MAN IS JOSEPH TONER. sometimes called, JOSEPH TONER, BROADWAY LEGEND. To this day, even as John Charles Thomas, his work is being stolen, concealed, and only through thourough historical research has the truth been uncovered.Initially the reports of who performed in Apple Blossom Time were different, but due to the recordings of a company called Aeolian, which was a Boston based company trying to promote Irish Catholic singers under pseudonyms. It competed with Victor and Columbia(who did not wish to recognize Joseph Toner, as fame means cost). However, his recordings became very popular, and the only way to handle the situation was to hire him. For the late 20's this went well, and as John Charles Thomas, Joseph Toner had a radio show between 1927-1930. But he was becoming too powerful. Too well known. His recordings stopped under his name, until Joseph Toner entered the WPA, which required him to sing opera.His original moderator was chosen to "become" John Charles Thomas in the 40's while Joseph Toner as JOHN CHARLES THOMAS sang for his country during the war, we have recovered many records demonstrating he was working for the US, with Romberg's "orchestra".The imposter eventually called "JOHN CHARLES THOMAS" was given the accolades for the role. However, currently there is a strong argument being made for the true identity of John Charles Thomas, based on a variety of modern techniques such as voice recognition, and various albums made later in life, in addition to what was legal to perform, and what would have suggested that this man was under the control of the Shubert Org. earlier in life, was in the WPA, and then recorded with Romberg during the war--who also recorded material of Jerome Kern. As per Romberg's records, these were released in the 60's as those of Earl Wrightson! However, Joseph Toner was asked to "try out" for Kiss Me Kate. In the first of those recordings, THE REAL EARL WRIGHTSON SINGS ONE PIECE! He is not bad, but he is no opera star!Another "Earl Wrightson" record is contaminated with the commentator who claimed to be "John Charles Thomas". Neither can be real.As it turns out, Joseph Toner as John Charles Thomas is the ONLY person to have recorded "OLD MAN RIVER" in the US, prior to 1946 (Robeson has published that he was not in the US, from 1928-1939, including for the 1936 film, where he did the recording for the film from England in Paul Robeson the Complete EMI Sessions 1928-1938. This and other results have lead to the argument that it is "Joseph Toner, Broadway Legend" under the pseudonym of John Charles Thomas, by far not his only pseudonym, who sang Apple Blossom Time.There are specific reason to make this conclusion. The recording of Apple Blossom Time, a show from 1916, was made by a Boston Based company, Aeolian Vocalion in 1916. Yet the supposed John Charles Thomas' next triumph Maytime, in 1917, was not recorded until 1922. Why was this? Joseph Toner played in Blossom Time which went on Tour in 1922 as per the NY times along the East, He would have had the opportunity to make the recording. Why did he not make it earlier? say in 1918-9? Joseph Toner went to WAR in late 1918, documented to return Dec. 10 1918, Severely Wounded in NY Tribune! Why did not JOHN CHARLES THOMAS?According to the way Victor counts years, and given the large collection of albums at my disposal, I can count back from years that have been clearly identified, and it demonstrates that the 1000 series, or the first year Thomas sang only for Victor Records was 1923. Other Victor record manuals use this method. Each performer has their own series. All albums starting with the digit 1 and having 3 more digits were from 1923.This includes OLD MAN RIVER, from 1923, sold worldwide.The source Empire Records has radio Broadcasts from 1927-1930 with yet another version!In 1959, under the name Torigi, the exact same performance is given in SP 344 Parade Records. What is more is that the international albums no longer covered by copyright demonstrate that "John Charles Thomas" was the first person to sing OKLAHOMA! in 1944. followed by South Pacific (the best selling South Pacific in history), and the King and I. He did not sing My Fair Lady as Joseph Toner was forced out of the theatre in 1953 for unionizing and standing up against segregation in the National Theatre, and lost. A new singer with a different voice but the same name was found. "John Charles Thomas" retired in 1953.The vocals of "Earl Wrightson" in one album are contaminated by the commentator who claimed to be John Charles Thomas PUBLISHED AFTER THOMAS WAS DEAD.Thus the history of John Charles Thomas And Earl Wrightson are now intermingled. Neither can be a true person, but the singer is absolutely real. Who was present? Who was there in 1960 and 1917? Going Back to Earl Wrightson's recordings, two are from performances documented in the NY Times to have been done by Joseph Toner! I could go on, but you get the idea. Oh, and one of the antique recordings is the ONLY recording of the original RAVENAL, or the 1932 RAVENAL, William Kent.Interestingly, Playbills have said that William Kent, John Charles Thomas, and Dennis King are ALL THE SAME PERSON. Later producers tried to change history..............recordings do not lie though. The National Theatre Database confirms that the original Ravenal is JOSEPH TONER, and WILLIAM KENT is JOSEPH TONER. The only real person they can be traced to is Joseph Toner. The first person to sing anything and different parts of SHOW BOAT.As I said, the answer to this question was of EXTREME importance.
