Karen McDonald, played by Suranne Jones, left the street in December 2004. She had a showdown with Steve McDonald after stealing Tracy Barlow's car with baby Amy in the back. Steve and Tracy had found the car on fire, and thought Amy was inside. Tracy confronted Karen believing she had killed her child and was stopped from attempting to murder her by Steve and Hayley Cropper. Steve had had enough and so Karen leaves him.

A number of actors left in 1987, but most had only small parts. The significant one, and probably who you are referring to, was Jean Alexander. She played Hilda Ogden. She did appear again in a one-off appearance in 1990.
