It all depends on a few things, such as how well you can cope with the pain involved in all tattoo work, the size and detail of the design you are getting, and how much fat or muscle is below the area of skin where the tattoo is going to be. As far as what my tattoo artist has told me, I believe the greatest nerve grouping to get inked on is anything over one's elbow. I personally have a spiderweb over one elbow that was done all in one shot with a 7-point needle (I told the artist to do it that way) and that had to be the most painful tattoo I have ever had done. Even the Italian flag on my chest didn't hurt anywhere near as badly. As a result, I have had five more tattoos done since the spiderweb and it is to the point that I no longer even consider the pain that could be involved. I'm not saying that every person can get inked so many times that they forget it hurts. I even get surprised now when a tattoo hurts because I am so focused on the end result that I forget about the whole process that involves needlepoints poking my skin thousands of times in one sitting. I'll put it this way: If you want the tattoo badly enough and are prepared to care for it for the two weeks or so that it takes for it to heal, then the pain of getting it done is a small sacrifice to endure for a piece of art on your body that will last as long as you live. The only other thing to consider is that if this will be your first ink, your best bet would be to get one on a spot such as your outer thigh that has a lot of muscle and/or fat over the bone to minimize the pain involved before you get inked in a spot that will hurt like hell. At least that's what I did (my first one was on the face of my shoulder and I didn't even feel it).
