It depends on what sort of guy he is. If he's the kind that doesn't care about his friend and only cares about having you all to himself then he won't avoid you, rather he will probably try to get you for himself.
However, if he is loyal to his friend then he may avoid you in order to try and get over his feelings for you so he doesn't cause any undue hurt.
