If slavery began in this country in 1619 why did it take 200 years to became such a divisive issue?

Slavery has been around for hundreds of years and still exists in some parts of the world today. It became a divisive issue in the 1800's because of the abolitionist movement in the North.

Why did slavery start in the United States?

To get free labor and for big selling profit. Slavery is still an issue today, even in the USA.

What were the main issue in the civil war they were fighting for?

The civil war was about slavery the united states split and the southern states wanted slavery but the northern states said every one has to follow the laws that forbid slavery

Which two issues played the GREATEST roles in causing the Civil War?

Slavery, and far, far, far behind that States' Rights (primarily insofar as some states wanted the right to keep slavery legal). Really, it was pretty much all about slavery. This is not to say that there weren't sound economic reasons why slavery was such an divisive issue (it wasn't that people in the north were just nicer or more ethical than people in the south). But: THE issue was slavery and anybody who believes otherwise is fooling themselves.

Why did the south state favored slavery?

Slavery meant a cheap labour force for their large plantation bases economy.Slavery was legal when the United States was formed. The southern states became dependent on slavery for cultivating, especially harvesting cotton, when the cotton gin was invented. Because the southern states suffered financially with international debt more than the northern states it was an economic issue that turned into a moral issue.
