Because chaos theory is just that; a theory. As far back as it has been seen, there has always been two sides, fighting for supremacy, trying to be the "ruling class". Why are WE against the compromise? COMPROMISE is against our nature! We are competitive creatures by core foundation of our souls. We all have a yearning desire to be "one-of-a-kind". People against the Constitution were Anti-Federalists. So there were 2 big compromises: the Great Compromise of 1787 and the 3/5 Compromise. A Bill of Rights was added to the Constitution later on during the debates.
The Fugitive Slave Act was an add-on to the 1850 Missouri Compromise. Many people, not just abolitionists didn't like it at all. Even people not against slavery did not believe it was their responsibility to help enforce it whether they received rewards or not. So basically, the abolitionists found allies among Northern people not wanting to get involved.
