Jaundice is caused by a build up of bilirubin, that in itself is not thought to be painful but the underlying cause of the jaundice - biliary cirrhosis, pancreatitis, coagulopathy, renal and liver failure are all possible sources of pain and need to be further investigated.

Obstructive jaundice, is caused by an interruption to the drainage of bile in the biliary system - this type of jaundice causes pain from an inflammation or blockage in a duct or organ.

Jaundice and pain are symptoms of the underlying disease and needs to be treated as such.

Should a person receive chemotherapy while having jaundice?

A person with jaundice can have chemotherapy. Jaundice is a disease of a blockage within the liver and/or bile ducts. The oncologist will decide which type of chemo and which dose is the most appropriate.

Does jaundice spread if you touch the hand of person having disease?

True jaundice comes from the reddish-yellow bile salt, bilirubin. Unusually high concentrations of this compound in the body cause yellowing, or jaundice. Jaundice is typically diagnostic of liver failure. As such, jaundice itself does not spread by touch. However, if an infectious disease has attacked the liver and thus is the root cause of the jaundice, that infection may be transmissible by touch.
