The bright red blood is oxygenated fresh blood. As the lining of the uterus becomes older (the underlying layers) the blood along with tissue and other cells/fluids contains less oxygen so they become darker and may appear brown.

Menstrual blood can vary in color and consistency due to factors such as the flow rate and the length of time it has been exposed to oxygen. Lighter-colored menstrual blood typically indicates that the blood is newer and flowing at a slower rate, allowing less time for oxidation and clotting to occur.
