Why is laptop screen black but its on?

Could be a problem with the circuitry connecting to the monitor. Take it to the nearest computerplace and they can diagnose the problem.

A few common problems.... Defective screen cable or loose connectoin, bad inverter, or CCFL backlight on laptop models per 2010. Cable issues produce a black screen while an inverter usually produces a faint image. Also a bad graphics card is a possibility.

Well depends on what you mean by on and screen black. There could be a few different things that cause this. The most popular answer would be the LCD screen and or back light are back on the computer, or there is a hardware issue with the CPU, Motherboard, or Video card preventing the computer from booting, but the lights on the laptop still come on, in which case, it would be on but not booting.

The quickest way to tell what the issue possible could be is to hook up an external monitor/TV to your computer. If you see something on those, then the issue would be the LCD Screen, if you dont see anything, then the issue would be hardware related and at that point, either buy a new one or bring it to an repair shop
