Federal regulations state that all Rifles muyst have a minimum barrel length of 16-inches, and an overall length of at least 26-inches. For Shotguns, the barrel must be a minuimum of 18-inches, with the same minimum overall length of 26-inches. Antique (pre-1899) firearms are exempted from this requirement if the were originally manufactured with short barrels.
