An apple can be seen as an example in stucturalism this way:

A structuralist approach study any human activity (rituals, games, literary and entertainment) to discover the deep structures by which meaning is produced and reproduced within the culture.

Structures are the "real things" that lie beneath the surface or the appearance of meaning.

An apple is not just a fruit, for the christians apple is the 'forbidden fruit' in the paradise. From that an apple has become more than mere fruit, there are many sayings which invovle apple: like "the apple of my eye", "as american as apple pie", "apple polishing" also many other things has apple in them like 'the Big Apple' for instance.
