This is a sad parody. in German, Kris Kringle is the popular term for Santa Claus, However this appears to be a parody or take-off on Krist Kindl literally the Christ Child which is really what Christmas is all about. somehow the imagery got shifted from the nativity to the chap in the Red suit. by the way there are Krist-Kindl Marts in Germany in the season which sell Christmas Cribs, etc. It is beyond argument that that is the etymology.
