Well, I'm American Indian and I have just recently moved to India and I could probably better answer this because my aunt is a principal of a 6000 student school. To be frank, the educational system of India is far more demanding and requires its students to have a thorough grasp of an overall knowledge of the Core Subjects. It's safe to say that Indian kids are more so pressured by their parents to do well and are also motivated to do well by themselves.
The main difference between say an Indian and an American is the level at which they are learning. In fact, it's needless to say that Indians, in general learn a far more advanced and demanding curriculum that encompasses and emphasizes Science and Math as well as vocational skills. However, this negative pressure causes many students to commit suicide if they are in danger of failing. In fact, student suicides are very common in India because of the pressure created by the student's parents/peers etc..
I wouldn't say Indians are "smart" I would say they are knowledgeable and have gained an understanding of all subjects. Finally, I WILL finish by saying that not many opportunities as far as college and general placement are available to Indians in fact placement tests in colleges acquire over 600,000 students a year it's amazing..
