Because it is not using the home tower. In my zip code (CDMA market), Verizon and US Cellular are the two providers. My Tracfone should be using Verizon towers, but it is using the US Cellular towers and showing roaming on the phone in the home area. Whenever the home towers are not being used, the Tracfone will show roaming on a CDMA phone. GSM phones are a different story.
the other day while at home I tried to make a local call with my Tracfone. It said I was roaming. I tried three time while moving within my home & it always said I was roaming. Then I tried to make a call on my wife's Tracfone and got the same message. My phone is an iPhone7, my wife's is an android. So the phone is not the problem. after about 10 min I tried again & was able to make a call. does anybody know why this happen
You are roaming only when you are out of your calling area. If you live in CA and call Maryland from within your calling area, it's not roaming. However, if you live in Maryland and calling from CA, you are roaming.
I have had the same problem. When you contact Tracfone they will tell you the local carrier does not provide it or the towers in your area can't send data. But what it is is Tracfone is unwilling to provide the service to you and the people in your area. I contacted my local provider and they do provide the service but Tracfone is unwilling to provide it to the customers. I called Tracfone and after 30 minutes I fianally got a superviser to admit Tracfone is unwilling to provide data service in my area even though they keep blaming the local carriers

For phone, how well the service covers the area I'd be calling from. Whether it was for local calling only, long distance, or anywhere. How often I'd be using the phone, If for emergencies only, I might want to just buy minutes from a carrier like TracFone.
That depends. If you are calling a mobile phone with a Fresno number, from a landline in Fresno, you can dial just the 7-digit number. If the mobile phone has a different area code, you will almost always need to dial it, and in many states if the mobile phone is not a local number for you, you may need to dial the area code, even if it's the same as your own.
One can find a map of Tracfone's coverage area on Tracfone's official website. They require you to type in your zip code to see your coverage. It is not a guarantee of coverage in any area whatsoever.
When you sign up for a mobile phone, there is usually a local area (could be your entire state, or could be your entire country). When you are inside your local area, you do not pay extra fees for long-distance connections. But if you travel outside your local area (could be to another state, or could be to another country), you are now "roaming" and your signal is bouncing off a different carrier, thus incurring long-distance call charges. Your phone company (Verizon, T-Mobile, ATT, GCI, etc) define the local area and what is considered roaming. This cannot be changed by the user. Talk to your phone company to find out what your local area is, and what charges will be incurred if you "roam".
