Later he worked as apprentice to Fezziwig whom he admired, especially for the way he treated his employees. Then he started to change because he saw Fizziwig become bankrupt and and face debtors prison. He faced life differently making it clear that he would not be taken down the same path. It appeared that being nice was not the way to live and only having wealth would allow him freedom. He lost his love Belle because of this attitude and when speaking to Fred about Christmas tells us how he feels stating "! Out upon Merry Christmas! What's Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in 'em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you"
