There are many non-religious people out there and think of Christmas as a time of getting gifts for people. For religious people, it is the birth of Christ. The star on the top of the tree is based on the star that led all of the shepherds to the inn that Mary and Joseph stayed in to have Jesus. Many people also put angels on top of the tree.

This answer is probably different for different people, but I celebrate it because it brings happiness to others, and especially joy to children. I think it also encourages us to do good to others, and to make the world a better place.
