----------Better answer: My opinion, scientifically or just my knowledge. People say "um" for mainly one reason. Thinking. Many people loose their train of thought from other things and repeat um if they somewhat forget. Or if they are being urged to think of something, real/unreal, lie/truth. Basic forgetfulness and needance of thought
