People hate gays and lesbians due to certain biases established by influential outside media, most commonly, but not limited to, religion. In all three Abrahamic faiths (Orthodox Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) homosexuality is considered a sin. However, the degree of this sin varies from religion to religion and denomination to denomination.
While clear indications of homosexuality being a sin exist in each of these religions' texts, some groups see all sin as the same, without degrees of severity, thus they do not discriminate against gay people because, as humans, already have sin just like heterosexuals.
Some religious groups are so anti-gay, they create entire theologies against it.
Still, even outside of the realm of religion, many individuals see homosexuality as being an unnatural occurrence. Because gay people obviously cannot reproduce, sexual acts of homosexuality are seen as unnatural, that is, not the way sexual activity should take place.
