I feel it's a combination of multiple things. 1) Religious indoctrination. When you are raised to believe that a way of life or being is wrong for so long, you accept it as fact. 2) Ignorance. People fear that which they do not understand. Also they are more easily misled to believe blatant lies about homosexuality (see #1) 3) Societal pressure. There is an underlying current in today's society that to not conform to the standard accepted norm is wrong, whether it be homosexuality or any other forms of living for one's own happiness.
