Well the piercing transverses several tissue types on it's way from the surface of the skin to the inside of the nose. Not all tissue types heal at the same rate, nor do they react the same way to piercing. I have simplified the layers below so you get a better basic understanding of what is involved in nostril piercing. 1) Surface dermal layer 2) Subdural layer 3) Cartilage layer 4) Mucosa layer So when you remove jewellery before the allowed time (based on the average healing period for a healthly individual following aftercare instructions) the tissue layers may close quickly, but not actually heal up. To get jewellery back in when this happens an insertion taper ( only available at body piercing studios ) is used to gently open the piercing path to allow jewellery to be reinsterted. Some studios charge a small fee for doing this for you.

Depends on how long you have them, and what kind they are. Piercings in the cartilage, lip and ear lobe rarely close completely, they scar while new skin might grow over the hole, the cartilage remains shattered. Tongue piercings heal quickly, because the tongue is a muscle. Dermal piercings also heal better than cartilage, but can leave a scar.
