(Compare this to cocaine which has twice as many oxygen atoms, and instead likes to deposit itself into urine. We say cocaine is water soluble because of this.)
Because the molecules like to stay in fat, they take a long time to leave the body. (Compare this to cocaine which leaves the body quickly through urination.) Remember, your body doesn't burn fat very fast, but you pee many times in a day.
So marijuana can show up for weeks or months, while other drugs which are water soluble leave in a matter of hours or days.
