Peacocks fan out their tail plumage. Bighorn sheep do it by butting heads. Guys do it by showing-off.
They try to do something they know they can't do. They want to seem cooler. So you can be impressed and be like "I want that boy!" Or so you can get his attention. He wants you to recognize him.
also because its a go-to easy way to start a conversation "hey, Amy look at this..." no awkward "so ummmmmm.......*sweats nervously*.....you come here often?" plus a man feels like if you think something's cool about him he feels more confident.
