It must be instinctive. I've seen other women (even actresses on set) feel their butt when standing or walking around, and then realised that it's a thing among us.
On a superficial conscious level, it may be because we want to make sure it looks good to whomever might glance at it.
I personally have a care about how my cellulitis looks because I am ashamed of it.
I just want to make sure my butt looks as good as possible by frequently checking in.
