To protect everyone else from second hand smoke that was recirculated throughout the aircraft. It's a fire hazard, stinks up the air, makes people sick and makes the interior furnishings smell.

Smoking were ban in schools because it can cause health problems. Smoking in public areas can affect non smokers. Smoking in hazardous areas can cause fire out break.
