Initially, the Spanish used native slaves to guarantee high production that would enable them to pay for their expedition and colonization. During the first decades of their colonization, thousands of indigenous people died from the cruel, harsh labor of the plantations or gold mines. Eventually the enslavement of native peoples was banned, but that just opened the door to the importation and subjugation of black slaves.
