buried alive
Alexander Graham Bell is buried at his private estate, Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia,
A person who sits by a grave and listens for a bell to ring is often referred to as a "graveyard watcher" or "grave watcher." Historically, this practice was associated with the fear of being buried alive, leading to the use of bells connected to a rope in graves, allowing those who were mistakenly buried to signal for help. Such individuals were also sometimes called "grave bell listeners." This practice has largely become obsolete with advancements in medical technology.

Today no one is buried alive, but a 150 years ago that wasn't so true. I don't know exact numbers, but I do know it was a real fear people had. There were caskets sold with bells attached so if they were buried they could ring a bell above ground. Edgar Allen Poe was so afraid of this he had a special casket made and left instructions with people about what to do.
The bells were there to keep you from being buried alive. They would drill holes in the coffin and attach a string to a bell at the surface. If you "woke up" alive in your coffin you could ring the bell and they would dig you up.
