Indentured servants were for a set period of time. And once word hit England about how they were being treated (beatings with whips and what not), they ceased sending them to the new world. The colonists in America needed the slave labor if you will, so they captured Native Americans as slaves. The Natives, however, knew the land and kept escaping. The colonists then needed someone who:1. did not know the land. 2. did not speak their languge. And 3. they could keep indefinitely. That is when the slave trade came into play. It was already being done in Spain. So New England got in on the goods. Africans, who practiced slavery amongst themselves (ie. When a member of another tribe failed to pay monies owed, their family was sold into slavery to the debtor or their daughters were sold at young ages, 12 years old at the youngest, as sex slaves), sold their people to slave traders for things, such as gold or weapons. So for the next 100-200 years or so, give or take a few, Africans remained slaves until Republican President Abraham Lincoln freed them. Their children were born into slavery, and if a white man or woman decided they loved a slave that much to marry them, they to became property of the slave owner. Slaves, like Indentured Servants, were forced to live in harsh conditions and barely had food. They had to work long hours on end, often not getting breaks. Slavery in the end was and is wrong. It is still going on today. Even America still owns slaves, hence the term Sweat Shop, where little kids are making the very clothes that you put on your back everyday, for hours and hours, in poor work conditions, and only make a buck off of that 30$ shirt you bought from ESPN Zone. (And I mean you in general. Not you personally)
African slaves replaced white servants because they were much cheaper. Many African slaves were kidnapped and sold from Africa against their wills.
No, Sojourner Truth's husband was not white. She was a former slave who married a fellow African American man named Thomas.
Improvements in conditions in Europe brought about a decrease in people attempting to leave the continent as indentured servants, and with the rise of the African slave trade, the need for indentured white servants that the colonists had to pay and eventually release decreased dramatically.
Historically, in the United States, many slave owners were indeed white. Slavery was deeply entrenched in American society, particularly in the South, where white plantation owners relied on enslaved African Americans for labor. It's important to note that slavery has existed in various forms across multiple cultures and time periods, and the concept of slavery is not limited to any one racial group.
There is no historical evidence to suggest that Olaudah Equiano, a prominent African abolitionist, had a white wife. Equiano documented his own experiences as a slave and his efforts to abolish the slave trade, but he did not mention having a white wife in his writings.
White women did not usually go to slave markets because it was considered socially inappropriate for them to be present at such events. Additionally, they were often shielded from the harsh realities of slavery and the treatment of enslaved people. White women were expected to uphold a certain image of gentility and refinement, which meant not being directly exposed to the brutality of the slave trade.
