Well, one gallon of water weighs just under 8.5 pounds.

8.5 x 5 = 42.5 pounds...So, you would think that you should be able to lift it no problem right?

But that isn't the case.

A five gallon jug of water is fairly large in size, and awkward to curl in ones hand as most of the weight is away from the handle and not evenly distributed. But a dumbbell is designed to fit in your hand and have evenly distributed weight on each side for exercise purposes. The large-awkward shape of the water jug accounts for the increased difficulty.
