"Excelsior" was used by a few companies to designate an unusually high GRADE of rifle- very fancy wood and metal finish on high dolalr firearms, such as the Savage 99. The Whitney Company had one antique model designated as Excelsior.
"Excelsior" is an adjective that is used to indicate superior quality by being placed in the names of publications, hotels and various products in earlier decades. Wood shavings that are used to package fragile objects are also called "excelsior." The original Latin connotation of this word meant "ever upward." This particular definition has been made popular by the character Patrick Solitano, who uses it frequently in the film "Silver Linings Playbook."
