It is unlikely that there are more lesbians than straight women nowadays. What has changed is that in Western society there is now more acceptance of alternative sexualities. Historically lesbians married because there was no other option available to them - it was safer to pass as a straight women and it seemed necessary in order to fulfill a biological impulse to bear children. Women were denied the opportunity to express their own sexuality and were viewed as tools for faciliatating men's sexual fulfillment. The feminist and sexual revolutions have changed all that. Some women chose 'political lesbianism' because they preferred to devote their energies to a partner who was mutually understanding and supportive rather than to a man.
As Western women now have greater economic independence and are able to marry one another and bear children by sperm donation many have begun to question what possible advantages there could be to a heterosexual marriage when there are valid alternatives available.
