Because a 'DMZ' is a de-militarized zone and weapons are military equipment. The idea is to create a tract of land between to feuding parties that seperates them, to give confidence to both parties there has to be agreement that this tract of land will remain free of all weapons.
One prominent area where no military forces were allowed is the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. Established after the Korean War armistice in 1953, the DMZ spans approximately 2.5 miles wide and serves as a buffer zone to prevent military confrontation between the two Koreas. It is heavily fortified on both sides but prohibits the presence of military personnel and weapons within its boundaries.

On a map, the 38th Parallel was the chosen spot for the buffer zone (No Military Forces Allowed-NO MAN'S LAND-De-militarized Zone/DMZ); the separating line between the two countries (North & South Korea).
