Why are men attracted to large breasts?

Before the invention of Birth Control, women started reproducing more or less as soon as they were physically mature and continued reproducing until fertility declined with age. In the intervening period they would be alternately pregnant or lactating. If a male wanted to identify a woman who was ready to breed - his own parter or someone else's - he would chose one with large breasts and a slim waist ie lactating and not pregnant.
